A mouth-watering home Relatively few contemporary homes are built in the Southern Highlands but a notable exception is the modernist Alpine Lodge on the Old Hume Highway at Alpine. Here large expanses of glass, an internal sandstone wall and polished concrete floors result in an energy-efficient home. Then, over 25 acres of what was once a pine plantation, the new owners have designed and built their own private golf course. Keeping it in the family Having parents who run a family business doesn’t mean offspring will want to join them but we found a fruit shop, a clothing shop and a fabulous retro cafe where adult children have happily taken up the baton – in one case as the fourth generation.  Dick Nell: Still doing his own thing Crop dusting, aerobatics, marathon vintage-aircraft flights and trail-biking are just some of the adventurous activities that Dick Nell, a long-time Goulburn resident, has packed into his action-filled life. Now 80, he tells Peter Meredith why he feels no inclination to stop.  Then and Now In the first photograph in our new series Then and Now we look at the Commonwealth Bank corner on Bong Bong Street, Bowral, looking towards what is now the ANZ Bank. The photograph was taken during the Eight-Hour Day Procession in 1909. Some of the buildings along this stretch of street are still standing today. Bulbs for summer and autumn We tend to associate bulbs with spring, but bulbs can also bring colour and interest to gardens in summer and autumn. Writer Jenny Simons offers plenty of tips for growing beautiful bulbs. Back to a creative future After a successful 40-year career in Asia as an advertising and marketing executive and publisher, Roy Howard reinvented himself as a cabinetmaker. Creating beautiful artefacts out of wood is his passion, but it’s only one of many facets of this multi-talented man. Joyful and triumphant Christmas is all about love and sharing – and that means the cook should relax too! Food writer Rosa Matto has devised an easy-to-serve menu to lighten the load on Christmas day.  Kids in the kitchen What a joy to see children working in the kitchen, taking charge of their eating and nutrition – and learning that cooking can be fun and bring family and friends together. What’s more, if you help them choose the recipes carefully and appropriately for their age group, everyone can succeed. So, these school holidays involve them in all stages – the shopping lists, the purchasing, the weighing and preparation and, of course, the cleaning up!
