Goulburn, Australia’s first inland city

The Goulburn district, first called Argyle County, was opened for settlement in the 1820s. Goulburn became a municipality in 1859 and a city in 1863. Today it is proud of its colonial and architectural heritage and is still the most important centre in the Southern Tablelands. Camden

Camden is the birthplace of Australian agriculture, thanks to the Macarthur family seat of Camden Park. The town sits on the banks of the Nepean River, and gives us a glimpse into 150 years of country life with a fine Victorian bank, townhouses, cottages, places of worship and even a livestock saleyards. Berrima

With its 19th century architectural and political history, Berrima, which was settled in the 1830s, is one of the most valuable assets on the Southern Highlands tourist route. Often identified as the finest preserved Georgian village on mainland Australia, its sandstone homes, shops and courthouse attract visitors from all around the world. With excellent locally owned shops, restaurants, cafes, antiques shops and a main street designed to be wide enough to turn around a bullock team, its sprawling character makes it the perfect place for walks and picnics. Mittagong

Of all the townships within the Southern Highlands, Mittagong has had the most name changes. It was called Gainsborough in 1841, Livingstone in 1842, Fitzroy in 1862, New Sheffield in 1865 and finally Mittagong in 1884. Read more...

Bowral

The town of Bowral, first settled in the 1840s, sits on the southern slopes of Mount Gibraltar and has grown to become the major commercial centre of the Southern Highlands. It’s quite apparent that Bowral wanted to relate more to Britain than Australia. There are the huge English oaks that welcome visitors at the start of the town, other deciduous trees displaying golden autumn colours, and many English inspired gardens, country lanes and fine houses. Miles Franklin, Goulburn

Author Miles Franklin, best known for her 1901 novel My Brilliant Career, grew up on a property near Bangalore but spent much of her time in the nearby city of Goulburn. The local library has published a self-guided walking tour including many of the places she frequented in the period shortly before and after 1900. Read more...
